The Order of the Secret Monitor is founded on the friendship between David and Jonathan, son of King Saul, as told in the First Book of Samuel. It is one of the fastest-growing Masonic Orders in the United Kingdom and is administered from Mark Masons’ Hall in London.
The earliest documented record of the Order comes from Scotland around 1790, although it may have existed earlier in Ireland. It was known in the United States by the 1820s and, after the American Civil War, Dr Issachar Zacharie brought it to England, probably around 1875.
Under his leadership, the Grand Council of the Order was formed on 15 July 1887 at a meeting held at the Hotel Victoria in London, under the banner of Alfred Meadows Conclave No. 1.
In Spain, the Order works through the District Grand Conclave of Spain, which installed its new District Grand Supreme Ruler at Ciudad Quesada (Alicante) on 26 September 2026.
A candidate for Induction must be a Master Mason in good standing and a member of a regular Craft Lodge under a recognised Constitution.
It recalls the bond between David, a courageous warrior and loyal servant, and Jonathan, son of King Saul. When Saul’s jealousy puts David’s life at risk, Jonathan secretly warns him not to return to the king’s household: this discreet warning gives the Order its name, the “Secret Monitor”.
It admits the candidate to an Assembly of Princes and tells of David’s escape, helped by Jonathan through a secret system of signals. It also shows how David, once king, took in a survivor of Saul’s persecution: a lesson in friendship and loyalty that endures through adversity.
It symbolises King David’s role at the head of the Conclave. It includes the Ceremony of Commissioning, which empowers the Supreme Ruler to confer the degrees in any Conclave of the Order and joins him to a network of practical friendship and mutual care.
